Boosting Childrens Self Esteem

Kids will be kids. At Steps to Success2 in Staten Island we understand children and also the importance of boosting self esteem starting at a young age. It’s a known fact that children with higher self esteem progress through life with less difficulty and are generally happier overall. Some of the things we do and suggest the parents of our students continue at home are:

  • Caregivers need to consider their own self-esteem, and be willing to admit mistakes.
  • Praise the efforts toward a goal, not only the results. If your child can get one arm in the sleeve, but not both, recognize that it’s still an accomplishment and that they are on the way to getting the whole coat on soon.
  • Understand that each child is an individual, in different stages, from different cultures and family combinations.
  • Provide opportunities to learn and let them feel proud of accomplishments. Let your child set the table or wrap a present, even if it’s not the way you would do it.
  • If kids do something wrong, help them recognize that the behavior is harmful to themselves or others, but they are not bad, stupid or worthless. Remember that everyone makes mistakes.
  • Activities – keep them busy with exciting activities to boost interaction with other kids.

Feel free to contact us if you have questions about your childs self esteem and how Steps to Success 2 a Staten Island Day Care can help with early childhood education.

While the selection process is tough  - that does not mean you have to make it difficult on you and your Staten Island child. We understand these issues and have come up with the following tips to make the situation easier on everyone involved:

  1. Make it into a game and involve your child. Take the top selections and make a creative visual which your child can be a part of when grading the daycare selections. This will empower your child and make it feel like they made the selection to go to the daycare
  2. Schedule a visit during business hours. Get your child into the daycare during playtime and see how they fare and engage with the other students
  3. Prepare a list of questions by both you and your child. Address those questions at your visit and have your child ask his/her questions too.
  4. Search online – In today’s day and age most daycares have websites. This will allow you to do your own research and learn about them before your visit. Read everything you can, search on the major search engines and be an educated decision maker.
  5. Plan ahead. Many daycare’s offer early enrollment opportunities. Make sure you start researching and looking into daycare with enough time to enroll and do all of your research.
